Tijuana rap, and happy MLK day

18 01 2009

Hey guys. Happy belated New Year by Eurowestern standards, and happy early New Year by Chinese calendar marking! By either measure, what a great time of year to breathe new resolve into our spiritual lungs.

group-building-photoI wanted to post the link to the photos from the Tijuana building trip. Rob and the OneSmallHouse.org team did an stellar job with the new clinic (this was really an amazing undertaking for a group of volunteers) and the house. As tremendous a job as it was, it’s not the scope of the project itself that impressed me most about the experience, but the intensity of love and the goodness of everyone who went on the trip. A teaching of Mother Teresa came up on the trip, and I thought it was applicable: “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”

Thank you so much to all of you who donated to the project. I hope that as you look through the photos of the build, that you can recognize that your contribution helped make this clinic and this house possible.

One of the things that I really love about working with Rob and the OneSmallHouse.org team is their intense commitment to work with and serve the poorest of the poor. In the coming posts, I’m going to be taking the blog to some loftier theoretical territory and exploring the implications for several ideological constructs. Transcendent through all of it, though, is the veritable craving to stay connected to the true needs in the world, and to make a difference in the lives of the poorest on the planet.

If you were not able to make it on this past build, but are interested in coming with the OneSmallHouse.org team on their next project, please email me. Keep your eyes peeled, as well, for news in the coming months about the next OneSmallHouse.org initiative. We would love to have you help. Also, donations to projects are welcomed and appreciated at any time (you can donate through the OneSmallHouse.org website).

It is apropos that the rap blog for the Tijuana trip coincides with the weekend that commemorates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., since his last days of life were invested in the Poor People’s Campaign to address the problems of economic justice. The night before his assassination, Dr. King spoke these words to a vivacious crowd:

“It really doesn’t matter what happens now…. some began to… talk about the threats that were out – what would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers…. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place, but I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And so I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

Let’s commemmorate his life and this celebratory weekend by contemplating our own role in the pursuit of economic justice, thinking about our own lives and how we can use them to help the poorest of the poor. It may not be in the form of something great—or perhaps it may. Either way, let us meditate on the implication of Mother Teresa’s suggestion, that regardless of whether or not we can do great things, we can—each of us—do small things with great love.
